Puri, Jan 21: State Pollution Control Board (SPCB) Wednesday served closure notice on three hotels on charges of releasing sewage into the sea.
The pollution watchdog also issued show-cause notice to 20 other entities in connection with the beach pollution issue.
“Three hotels have been issued closure notice while 20 others have been issued show-cause notice under Section 33(A) of Water Pollution Act 1974,”said an SPCB official.
SPCB sources said the notice has been issued to Nilachal hotel at Chaitanya Square, Asia in Beach Resorts at Baliapanda and RL hotel near Swargadwar.
On the other hand, show-cause notices were issued to Rumani hotel, Seagull Resort Private Limited, Maharaj hotel, Rajtarang hotel, Subhas hotel, Srikhetra hotel, Durgabadi Samiti, Ganesh Guesthouse, Mallika Bhawan, Jolly House, Holiday Home, Radhamani Bhawan, Jagannath Villa, Insurance Cooperative Society, Chef-Cum-Resort, Monika Bhawan, Katriya House, Hongkong Bank Cooperative Socity and Sea Dream lodge, SPCB sources said. According to sources, several hotels and lodging houses have come up near the beach without the approval of the SPCB. A majority of these hotels do not have sewage treatment plants and they are allegedly releasing sewage into the sea causing beach pollution.
Sources in the SPCB said 468 hotels have been built in the Coastal Regulation Zone area. Till date, only, six hotels have set up their own sewage treatment plants while nine others have taken steps for the construction of treatment plants.
